I am not a fan of summertime t.v. at all. I’ll occasionally get sucked into something and ride it out…Rob and Big. Funny. Gene Simmons. Funny. The British food guy who does Dinner Impossible or whatever it is. Love it. Pretty much anything on the Food Channel, Discovery, or A&E. But the reality/competition stuff, I’ve tried! Seriously!! It’s just not in my DNA to love it. It is what it is. However…
I’ve been reading a lot this summer. I did the latest Stephanie Plum, Lean Mean Thirteen. (Kizz, I’ll get it to ya after I get it back from Mom.) I did the 6th Women’s Murder Club mystery by James Patterson. To both of those I say,”ehhhh. . . “
I started working on a Vince Flynn spy/espionage/shoot em up thing. Slow going, not my kind of read, but ok. There were a few others in there that I’ve already forgotton.
Two days ago, a girl at work was reading a book and I asked if I could have it when she was finished. It’s been out awhile, I’ve seen it in the magazines on the top whatever lists of good books, just never picked it up. Well,I just finished it and holy crap. It’s one of THOSE. I highly reccommed The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
A-Maze-Ing.
I can’t sleep, my head is full, my emotions are tight. I know he’s published a new one this summer and I want it tomorrow. I want to talk about it. Have any of you read it? Run don’t walk. It’s harrowing, and warm, and stark and just freakin impressive. I would love to write like him. Sigh.
I’m going to try to sleep now. Ha. I have an 11 hour day tomorrow, so this post will probably have to do. I’m dying to have someone to bookclub this thing with!

I read it a while ago and I know Chili read it too, I’m sure she’d be happy to chat about it. Full disclosure, though, I am one of like 2 people in the known universe who didn’t really like the book. So, I’d love to hear what you did like about it and where it took you.

That’s ok, you don’t have to like it! I was a little bogged down in the vocabulary, and geography but muddled through. I think the running theme of pennance, and never feeling worthy and finally a tiny bit of salvation…the relationship with the father and son that only becomes clear and consice after death…the deepest bonds of friendship and that part of hummanity inside us all that is selfish and dark…it wasn’t an easy read. Even without the foreign locations and words and the glimpse into history, it was stark and raw and I couldn’t put it down. It’s been so long since I’ve ready anything that wasn’t a genre, i.e. mystery, romance, vampire, porn, that it was refreshing for my brain. Now, I’m curious, what did you not like about it? My friends never glom onto the same stuff I do. Chrome never jumped into YaYa’s I think it was, Gert has a list of things she reads that I do not. So no worries!

Devil in the White City was extraordinary. Every one I know who read it was fascinated. It parallels the planning/building of the Chicago World’s Fair with America’s first serial killer.I also loved The Sisters and Five Sisters…one is about the Langhorne sisters of Virginia and the other is about the Mitford sisters of England. Both interesting sets of girls (5 in each family I think…almost all married interestingly…one married the guy who painted the Gibson girls… or had interesting political affiliations…including bff w/Hilter..weird).Fast Food NationNickle and Dimed in AmericaI read the biography of the guy who discoverd the color mauve. It was boring….got sucked in by a pretty color cover and a romantic idea…discovering a color….

Gert has loved the Devil book for awhile now. I’ll check into the sister’s books. Mauve. I’ve never thought about the guy who discovered the color mauve…never thought if it as being discovered at all, much less by a guy, and a guy who has a biography. huh. go figure.
