DuranDuran and a side of Ortho Novum please

A Portland ME middle school voted last night 10-2 in favor of giving birth control patches and pills to students. The parents of these 6th and 7th grade students would NOT be told about it. There were droves of parents at the school board meeting last night bantering the cons, mostly.

I’m amazed. 6th GRADE???? On the pill? Now, my mom took me for my first gyno/pill appointment so I didn’t have to do the whole secrecy thing. I’d be that kind of parent, putting the information and education into my kids head. I don’t know how I feel about someone else chucking a handful of pills to my kid without my slightest knowledge. Don’t get me wrong. I think that kids are going to have the sex. regardless. I think that the schools are lacking in education and even more so, parents. (one of my soap boxes is the thought that schools are supposed to raise children, to be not only their academic, but moral compass solely without any parental help) So I do agree that children need the knowledge and possibly the medication to protect themselves when they will inevitable make the decision. . . but DAMN! 6th grade??? How old are middle school kids?

I’m at a disadvantage here. No kids. It’s easy for me to rail about it without anything to base it on. So I ask you. Kids or no kids, what do you think? I don’t know…when I was in the 6th and 7th grades I was more obsessed with trying to get my mom to buy me a real Izod shirt, a real Swatch watch and figuring out how John Taylor, bass player from Duran Duran was going to meet me, fall in love and marry me by Sr Prom.

  1. Are they making this stuff available to kids or are they like slapping a patch on them as they swing through the metal detector in the morning? I’m all for making it available easily. A lot of parents aren’t as smooth as you are with the offering. For sure I wasn’t ready for such a thing when I was in 6th grade but in the small town where I grew up they’re having to put monitors on school buses because bjs are being given in the back seat so, times are changing I guess. Hard to believe that kids could actually get stupider than I was back then but I guess it’s possible.

  2. I think it’s being made available. and the parents will not be alerted. BJ’s in the bus??? Good lord. That just can’t be comfortable, frankly. Chrome…you’re living under a star baby! It’s your power month and apparently ALL good things are coming your way. Tell my bf John Taylor I STILL heart him and would consider possibly a bj with him in the back of a bus…..wahoo!!!
